At the EWMA 2023 Conference in Milan, several elected and co-opted new members were welcomed to the EWMA Council, one of them being: David Pérez Barreno.
About David Pérez Barreno
David Pérez Barreno is a dedicated nurse and physiotherapist specialising in wound care in Málaga, Spain. With a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes, David works as an advanced practice nurse in primary care, focusing on the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. In this interview, David shares his professional journey, his contributions to wound care in Spain, and the global impact of EWMA’s work.
Early Career and Contributions to Wound Care
David’s journey into wound care began with a focus on education. “I started working in wound care teaching people about how to avoid pressure ulcers,” he explains. Recognising the critical need for specialised knowledge in this area, he pursued a master’s degree in wound care, which further deepened his expertise.
One of David’s notable contributions to the field is the development of a mobile application designed to assist healthcare professionals in preventing and managing pressure ulcers. “I made a mobile app to help professionals to know about pressure ulcers,” he says. This innovative tool has become a valuable resource for clinicians, reflecting David’s commitment to improve patient care.
Joining the EWMA Council
David’s leadership role extends to his position as the president of the Spanish Association on Vascular Nursing and Wounds (AEEVH). This role has given him a unique perspective on the needs and challenges of wound care in Spain.
His decision to join the EWMA Council was driven by a desire to bridge the gap between local practices and international standards. “I wanted to join the EWMA Council because, as the president of AEEVH, I can contribute to the EWMA Council, and the EWMA Council can contribute to the practices in Spain too,” he explains.
The Global Impact of EWMA
For David, EWMA represents a cornerstone in the global advancement of wound care. “EWMA is a reference, worldwide, not only in Europe,” he states. The association’s influence extends far beyond Europe, with its publications and resources playing a crucial role in the daily work of healthcare professionals around the globe.
“EWMA’s papers in professional daily work are so important because of the documents and all the material that’s published,” David notes. These resources are valuable for clinicians seeking evidence-based guidance and best practices in wound care.
