About the initiative

What is the EWMA Patient Voices Initiative?

The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that the patient perspective is included in the EWMA projects and activities. We believe that patients’ experiences and insights are essential to improving wound care.

By sharing your views, you will help create better resources for healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers, with a clear focus on the patient’s role in wound care and recovery.

Who is it for?

The initiative is for people located in a European country, who have lived experiences with wounds.

People who do currently have a wound, did have a wound in the past, or is in the risk of developing a wound, are welcome to apply for membership of the Patient Voices Initiative.

The group is for people who are motivated and willing to contribute with their stories, experiences, and perspectives within the field of wound care.

Why does patient engagement matter?

Patient engagement is essential to EWMA because the people who lives or had lived with a condition understand its impact more deeply than anyone else. Their experiences reveal what truly works in daily life, where gaps in care exist, and how services can be improved. When patients are actively involved in shaping care, policy, and education, the result is more relevant, effective, and compassionate healthcare.

Engaging patients leads to better outcomes, stronger trust, and solutions that reflect real needs rather than assumptions. It ensures that healthcare evolves with the people it is meant to serve — making their voices not just valuable, but indispensable.

What to expect as a member?

The EWMA Patient Voices Initiative is a network of people with lived experiences with wounds from all over Europe, who are motivated to share their stories and perspectives to help shaping the future of wound care.

Members of the group might be invited to:

  • participate in groups and committees
  • review educational materials for professionals and patients
  • share their perspective in discussions and advocacy

The type of activities and the level of engagement depends on the preferences of the single member. Please read more about the the membership conditions and application here.

Who runs the EWMA Patient Voices Initiative?

The panel is organised and managed by the EWMA Patient Liaison Group, which has around 5 members from different European countries. Their goal is to create and maintain guidance and information for patients with chronic wounds, and to strengthen the involvement of patients and their families in wound care.

The members of the Patient Liaison Group represent a broad range of European languages to ensure that the members of the panel receive relevant information in their own language.

The administrative part of the Patient Panel is handled by the EWMA Secretariat, located at Nordre Fasanvej 113, 2000 Frederiksberg, Denmark.
