Back in May, we welcomed four new members to the EWMA Council. This article is part of a series introducing the four new members.
We are delighted to present Dr. Hakan Uncu. Hakan Uncu brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the field of wound care.

About Dr. Hakan Uncu

Hakan Uncu is a Professor of General and Vascular Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University.

He has been serving as the President of the Wound Management Association of Turkey (WMAT) since 2021 and has directed the Wound Care Center at Ankara University Hospital since 2013.

How Did Hakan Uncu enter the field of wound management?

After completing a five-year specialisation training at Ankara University, Hakan Uncu gained significant experience in peripheral vascular surgery in Rome and London. His journey into wound management began when he was the Director of the Vascular Surgery Department at his university. Invited by WMAT to lecture on vascular leg ulcers at the Turkish National Congress, he became deeply involved in wound management training activities across Turkey.

Since 2021, he has been the president of WMAT, focusing on arterial and venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot management. Reflecting on his involvement, Hakan Uncu shares,

“From that day on, I took part in all training activities related to wound management in Turkey.”

Encountering EWMA

Hakan Uncu became an active participant in the EWMA conferences and organisation after attending the 23rd Conference in Brussels in 2011.

“There, I realised that EWMA was a very important organisation,”
he recalls.

Joining the EWMA Council

Hakan Uncu’s decision to join the EWMA Council stems from his desire to share his extensive clinical experience in wound management. He looks forward to collaborating with council members, many of whom are his friends, and hopes to transfer the knowledge and experiences gained through EWMA to his colleagues across Turkey. He also plans to facilitate important joint meetings to advance wound care practices.

“I want to share my many years of clinical experience as a senior surgeon in wound treatment on EWMA platforms,”
he states.

The Strength of EWMA

Hakan Uncu believes that EWMA is a robust, useful, and effective association that benefits and is important to the global wound care community. Its initiatives and collaborative efforts significantly enhance the quality of care provided worldwide.

Future Challenges and Opportunities in Wound Care

Addressing the future of wound care, Hakan Uncu notes the increasing problem with wounds in the aging global population. Different specialists in various regions of Europe treat wounds using diverse methods. As the demand for wound specialists grows, standardizing treatment protocols, such as debridement, becomes essential. He sees great opportunities arising from these challenges. In addition to its annual congress, Dr. UNCU believes that EWMA can organise training courses in cooperation with national associations across Europe and globally. He firmly believes that EWMA plays a pivotal role in advancing wound management.

“Great challenges bring great opportunities,”

he says, emphasizing the potential for EWMA to make a significant impact.
