Living with chronic wounds in France

In these videos we follow a pressure ulcer (PU) patient and watch his story being told from three different angles: the patient’s, the health care professional’s and the institution’s. The videos were created by filmmaker Aurora Piaggesi. Copyright © EWMA 2018.

About

Hôpital Lapeyronie, Montpellier

Description

The case was a patient paraplegic after a car accident who underwent a long series of difficulties of successive failing treatments.
In many countries patients presenting large sacral pressure ulcers also present some psychological features which are most of the time linked to the pathology. Usually depression is coming some years after the accident, if they are living as a couple it may be broken due to secondary consequences, as well as working difficulties. Some hospitals in US consider that these patients are too heavy and they refuse to treat them. Compliance is not always there and surgery may fail.
Our wound healing center in the Montpellier University Hospital is a 6 bed unit, working in conjunction with a rehab center with 60 beds where negative pressure therapy is applied, the hospital length of stay being optimised by back and forth transfers between the center and the unit. Some patients are managed at home and telemedecine helps to determine the progression of wound care.

The video is in French with English subtitles.
