Call for Papers

We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Special Issue for July 2027 dedicated to “Atypical wounds”, which remain an underdiagnosed and neglected type of chronic wounds.

Atypical wounds is an umbrella term describing a heterogenous group of wounds defined as the absence of common aetiologies and comprising wounds of e.g. inflammatory, vasculopathy, malignant, metabolic, psychogenic or infectious origin. Examples of atypical wounds include skin ulcers due to vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, livedoid vasculopathy, calciphylaxis, Martorell ulcers, artefactal ulcers, malignant ulcers and ecthyma gangrenosum as well as wounds related with some rare diseases.

The aims of the special issue are:

• Identify emerging technologies that enhance the diagnostics of atypical wounds
• Evaluate new treatment modalities in atypical wounds
• Analyse pathophysiology behind the occurrence of atypical wounds
• Recognise the impact of atypical wounds on the quality of life of the patients

We invite clinicians, researchers, medical device developers and industry partners involved in research and innovation in atypical wounds, as well as interdisciplinary teams to contribute and submit original studies, systematic or narrative reviews, implementation reports, case series and perspective papers that contribute to advancing the diagnosis, management, and understanding of atypical wounds.

Prospective authors are welcome to contact one of the Guest Editors to discuss whether their work is suitable for this special issue before submitting their work.

All submissions will be subject to double-blind peer review and are expected to be published in July 2027.
