At the EWMA 2023 Conference in Milan, several elected and co-opted new members were welcomed to the EWMA Council, one of them being: Corrine Scicluna.

About Corrine Scicluna

Corrine Scicluna, the president of the Maltese Association of Skin and Wound Care, has been a dedicated professional in the field of wound care since 1994. Her journey into this specialisation began unexpectedly, but it has shaped her career and contributed significantly to wound care practices in Malta.

In this interview, Corrine reflects on how she started in wound care and the motivation that drove her to become a leader in the field.

Early Days in Wound Care

Corrine’s entry into wound care was unplanned. “I started working in wound care by coincidence,” she recalls. After completing a four-year diploma course at the University of Malta, Corrine began her nursing career in Valletta, Malta’s capital city.

As a young, newly qualified nurse, she assumed she was well-prepared for her role. However, reality quickly set in when she was faced with numerous patients suffering from wounds. “I had no idea how to treat them,” Corrine admits. The lack of specific training in wound care left her feeling uncertain and unprepared.

In those early days, Corrine frequently sought advice from doctors, only to be told, “Do what you think is necessary.” This response made her realise the importance of gaining more knowledge and expertise in wound care. “The fact that I did not know made me think, okay, this is where I need to learn more,” she says.

This drive to fill the gaps in her knowledge marked the beginning of her commitment to wound care.

Becoming a Leader in Wound Care

Over the years, Corrine’s dedication to learning and improving her skills in wound care led her to become a leader in the field. As the president of the Maltese Association of Skin and Wound Care, she now plays a pivotal role in promoting better practices and education for healthcare professionals in Malta.

Her journey from a junior nurse to a key figure in wound care is a testament to her perseverance and commitment to improving patient care.
