This prestigious award, given out by the American Limb Preservation Society (ALPS) at their annual conference DFCon, honors individuals whose dedication, expertise, and compassion have profoundly advanced the field of diabetic foot care and limb preservation.
Professor Piaggesi, serves as the Director of the Diabetic Foot Unit at the University Hospital in Pisa, Italy— a position he has held since 2012. He has redefined diabetic foot care through his pioneering work as a “limb preservation specialist,” establishing Tuscany’s renowned “Diabetic Foot Valley” as a global model of interdisciplinary excellence.
Through his leadership in the EWMA Diabetic Foot Committee, Professor Piaggesi and EWMA are extending this collaborative approach across Europe, inspiring healthcare systems for better care. Dr. Piaggesi has contributed to groundbreaking research, bringing innovative insights into the field of diabetic foot to clinicians globally.

The Edward James Olmos award is named in honor of the celebrated actor and director Edward James Olmos, who has been active in raising awareness of the ravages of diabetes and the importance of limb preservation in the Latino community in America.
