EWMA electronic supplement - January 2012

Dear Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure to present to you the latest edition of the EWMA electronic supplement. This edition has contributions from 11 cooperating organisations based in Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK. EWMA is particularly proud of its collaboration with our cooperating organisations across Europe as it is through this collaboration that we can all actively enhance the education, research and clinical practice of wound management and tissue viability on an international front.
The close liaison between EWMA and the cooperating organisations is crucial as it is through this liaison that mutual understanding and achievement of goals can be realised. Therefore, the 5 representatives from these organisations, who sit on EWMA council, act as the pivotal link between EWMA and our European partners. Increasingly we see this link as central to ensuring good communication between EWMA and the cooperating organisations, thus, at EWMA we continually strive to develop opportunities for realisation of this objective. We will therefore look forward to hearing the experiences of the 5 members on EWMA council at the dedicated Cooperating Societies meeting during the 2012 conference.
I hope that you will enjoy reading this edition of the EWMA Journal Electronic Supplement.

Editorials
Dear Readers,
We are very happy to make a contribution to the October issue of the EWMA Electronic Supplement. We are very grateful for the invitation and we would like to thank the EWMA for the good cooperation in 2011.
Three of the following articles were originally published in the “Zeitschrift für Wundheilung” (ZFW) (Journal for Wound Healing). The ZFW is an body of the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Wundheilung und Wundbehandlung e.V.” (DGfW) (the German Society for Wound Healing and Wound Treatment).
The DGfW is a non-profit organisation with the aim of supporting the transfer of knowledge between science and practice in wound care. It was established in 1994 as a scientific society and has been a member of the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Wissenschaftlich Medizinischen Fachgesellschaften e.V.” (AWMF) (German Scientific Medical Society) since 2004.
The statutory mission of the DGfW is to gain and promote new knowledge of wound healing and wound treatment in practice, research and science in the fields of diagnosis, therapy and prevention.
To that end the society supports targeted projects within the scope of working groups, an academy and a study centre.
The DGfW is financed through membership fees and donations. All funds are used exclusively to fulfil the statutory mission.
The society acts as editor of the ZFW. The journal is published quarterly by the publishing house “Congress Compact Verlag Berlin”. The content of the ZFW addresses different medical disciplines and other professions involved in wound care. Reports concerning possible active and preventive measures for improving the situation of people suffering from chronic wounds provide new impetus for everyday practice. Thus, an overview of useful and targeted treatment strategies is given to the reader. Hence, the ZFW pursues the objective of being a scientific journal with a focus on practical implementation.
The three articles presented are taken from three different issues of the ZFW published during the last five years.

Dear Readers,
We are very happy to present the most recent Electronic Supplement of the EWMA journal (click on the image) which includes reprints of five instructive scientific articles from two German wound healing journals.
Two of these papers were originally published in the journal WUNDMANAGEMENT. WUNDMANAGEMENT is the official publication of the following German-speaking societies:
• Initiative Chronische Wunden e. V. (ICW e. V.) • Österreichische Gesellschaft für Wundbehandlung (AWA) • Schweizer Gesellschaft für Wundbehandlung (SAfW) • Wundnetz Kiel e. V. • Wundverbund Südwest e. V. • Wundzentrum Hamburg e. V.
WUNDMANAGEMENT serves as a platform for all those dealing with care, prevention and treatment of chronic wounds. It encourages the exchange of information and experiences relevant to very practical issues as well as the publication of scientific expertise and reports on wound management and health economics. The readers will be informed of the latest developments in the care of acute and chronic wounds as well as of state-of-the-art scientific insights. In particular, the journal aims to promote the dialogue and fruitful cooperation among all those involved in wound care as well as pragmatic approaches for standardised measures. The Editorial Board consists of a multidisciplinary team and ensures a high standard of the submitted scientific manuscripts through a peer-review process in accordance with the ”Uniform Requirements“ of biomedical journal editors. Although it is primarily directed at the German-speaking readership, extended abstracts of the main articles are published in English to facilitate international contacts.
Despite the fact that approximately 90 % of the German population are members of a statutory health insurance which includes access to wound care and bandaging materials, considerable differences in individual wound treatment can still be observed. From an economic viewpoint, the optimisation of wound care through prevention of wounds, early detection and specific treatment harbours a significant money saving potential. Thus, the recent and current activities of the Initiative Chronische Wunde e. V. concentrate on pooling clinical and scientific data, on education and on public relations.
The articles were carefully selected to reflect these activities and we are proud to have the opportunity to make them available to an international readership by publishing them in the EWMA journal. We hope that these articles will provide valuable information to all those who are engaged in the care of patients suffering from chronic wounds. In particular, we hope that readers will be able to implement the insights gained from these articles in their daily routines for the benefit of their patients.

Dear Readers,
We are very happy to present this Electronic Supplement of the EWMA journal (click on the image) dedicated to five contributions selected from ACTA VULNOLOGICA, the official journal of the Italian Association of Cutaneous Ulcers AIUC. The papers presented reflect original research studies from various wound care groups in Italy and describe actual issues in our national healthcare system.
The journal ACTA VULNOLOGICA publishes scientific papers on the physiopathology and treatment of chronic and acute cutaneous ulcers and has a long and very well-established editorial reputation. The journal, organized into different sections with editors in charge, also has an international editorial board in order to expand overseas collaboration and maintain its high profile. The Index citation and potential impact factor are the next goals for the journal.
The AIUC society is continuously growing and the increased number of members is an indication of the high interest the society attracts from healthcare professionals in Italy.
Overall, we hope that these papers will be informative to all who care for patients with wound problems. We hope readers will read the following articles with care and extract the best for the purpose of practice and patient satisfaction.

Electronic Supplement October 2008
Contents Editorial
Dear Colleagues,
We hope that you particularly enjoy this issue of the EWMA Journal Electronic Supplement which gives you the opportunity of reading selected papers previously only published in a Polish wound care journal: “Leczenie Ran”. We believe that this is a splendid addition to the services that EWMA provides, reflecting its European commitment to wound management. Via this supplement specialists in wound management throughout Europe will be easily able to share their work with the English speaking readership.
In this edition of the EWMA Journal Electronic Supplement, we have selected five very different papers: a review of pyoderma gangrenosum as a cause of leg ulceration, a study examining delays in healing following abdominal surgery in patients with ulcerative colitis and metastatic disease, a paper examining the effect of venous reflux on healing, another on the role of compression therapy after surgical intervention, and finally an analysis of bacterial flora found in leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. Making this selection was not easy given the number of excellent papers but we hope that this edition gives you some idea of the diversity of work in the field of wound management taking place in Poland and will encourage publication in this journal as suggested by its editor.
Deborah Hofman Editor of EWMA Journal Electronic Supplement

Dear Fellow EWMA Members,
We are very pleased and honored to welcome you to the Electronic Supplement of EWMA Journal October 2008 presenting selected papers published in the official journal of the Polish Wound Management Society – „Wound Management” („Leczenie Ran”). As soon as the Polish Wound Management Society was established in 2002 we decided to start the independent and specialized periodical on professional wound management and research presenting Polish developments to the Polish medical doctors and nurses, who make up the team in professional wound care.
Everybody knows how difficult it is to establish and then run such a journal especially in a highly competitive environment of scientific information. Together with a professional publishing house which has an outstanding experience on the Polish publishing market – Blackhorse Scientific Publishers, Ltd. - we successfully published five volumes of the journal – firstly as a quarterly issue and now, for more than a year, bimonthly.
All collected papers, except EWMA Position Documents and WUWHS official documents, are original and not published elsewhere before. We have a lot to do in order to improve the scientific quality and international distribution of the journal, but we are very proud to be visible and well recognized within the Polish medical community.
So far, we have established excellent cooperation with Polish Burns Society and Polish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery which appointed „Wound Management” as their official journals. Thanks to this cooperation we welcome every year the official meetings of these societies publishing abstracts and then full papers. One of the most crucial developments of this alliance is the worldwide renowned World Congress of the European Club of Paediatric Burns going to be held in Gdansk/Poland on October 8—10, 2008. “Wound Management” is proud to welcome all the scientific papers to be presented in the very recent issue of the journal.
We are looking forward, to expand into Central and Eastern European countries. In order to achieve this goal we would be very pleased to serve the best editorial service for all Fellow Colleagues form all over Europe who would consider submission of their scientific papers to “Wound Management”. We admire all your personal involvement in wound care research, and we would be happy to put all EWMA Fellow Members to the fast editorial pathway to have your papers published as soon as the peer review process is successfully completed.
We hope, you will join us soon and we will be able to present your research in “Leczenie Ran”.
Enjoy the issue!
Yours sincerely,
Zbigniew Rybak Honorary Editor, “Wound Management”
Grzegorz Oszkinis Editor-in-Chief, “Wound Management”
