EWMA Objectives for 2012-13
A main objective for EWMA over the next years is to focus on the multidisciplinary approach to wound care. This includes actively involvement of not just the varied medical professionals but also the patient; by recognising that the patient is/should be used as a resource and a partner. EWMA will also actively initiate collaboration with patient organisations.
Another EWMA objective is to focus on the health care organisation with regard to prevention and treatment of patients with wounds. By a more process oriented structure focused on clinical result as well as health economics, various health care systems have a large potential to be more effective, which will be beneficial both for patients and caregivers in these times of financial constraints. By addressing key policy makers and using health economical arguments, EWMA intends to improve the opportunities for wound care in order to attract the political attention which wound care needs.

Information on UCM
EWMA encourages all wound care teachers to consider the positive outcomes of participating in the EWMA UCM programme. The EWMA University Conference Model (UCM) combines academic studies at a university of own choice with active participation in the EWMA Conference. This allows the coordinator of a group of students to create a unique teaching programme, taking advantage of the experts present and the international network, as well as the selection of plenary sessions, workshops and specific activities targeting the EWMA UCM students.
To find further information about how to join the EWMA UCM, please visit the webpage here.
EWMA Documents on debridement and antimicrobials
EWMA will produce two new documents in 2012:
The EWMA document on Debridement will present the position of EWMA on the overall theme of debridement. EWMA aims to produce an up-to-date document relevant for, and actively used by, wound management practitioners and associations across Europe.
The EWMA Document on Antimicrobials aims to meet the on-going discussion across Europe concerning the consequences of a biological mutation of infections and the subsequent potential resistance to current products. The document will describe the related aspects of antiseptic, antibiotic treatment and other relevant treatment methods.
EWMA on Patient Outcome Group
The EWMA Patient Outcome Group has summarised the objectives and activities of the Group in a ‘Pixi’ version, which is available on the EWMA website. For more information about the Patient Outcome Group please click here
Furthermore, the EWMA Evidence document has been summarised in another Pixi, and can be downloaded here.
EWMA Cooperating organisations can support the work of the group by translating the Pixies into their local language, and distributing it nationally.
EWMA Master Course – Budapest, Hungary The 1st EWMA Master Course was held on 13-14 October in Budapest on the theme “Is Oedema a Challenge in Wound Healing?”
The programme consisted of a mixture of theoretical lectures and practical workshops and was centred on diagnosis, prevention and management of oedema in wound healing. The course participants expressed great satisfaction with the content of the course, and felt the course provided solid theoretical information combined with practical skills which they can use in their everyday work life.
Leg Ulcers & Compression Seminars 2011
Organised by the International Compression Club (ICC) and EWMA, in collaboration with local wound management associations, the Leg Ulcer & Compression Seminars were held in Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest on the 10, 11 and 13 October.
With a large number of participants the seminars were a great success. As a result of the seminars, a more informed debate concerning the issues of prevention and treatment of leg ulcers has been started in all three countries, with the main objective being to move forward the political agenda.
