The EWMA University Conference Model

The EWMA University Conference Model (UCM) is a unique model that combines academic studies at a university of own choice with active participation in the annual EWMA Conference.

The EWMA UCM was piloted with success at the EWMA Conference in Glasgow in May 2007. Since, the EWMA UCM programme has been successfully run during the conferences in Lisbon (2008), Helsinki (2009), Geneva (2010) and Brussels (2011).

If you would like to join the EWMA UCM programme or have questions regarding the programme, please contact the EWMA Secretariat at ewma@ewma.org

The following articles published in the EWMA Journal provide more information on the EWMA UCM. The latest article deals with one of the challenges in the UCM which is a question of financing:

As the following articles indicate, the EWMA UCM has been a positive experience for participating students. Note that the second article is in Danish and taken from the Danish/Norwegian wound journal SÅR:

Participate in the EWMA UCM in Vienna 23-25 May 2012
Students participating in the EWMA UCM usually make very positive evaluations of their experience. Amongst others, they point to the opportunity for networking, the knowledge sharing across countries and the focus on evidence based teaching as important reasons for judging the UCM participation a success.

The opportunity of participating in the EWMA UCM is available to all teaching institutions with wound management teaching programmes for health professionals.

EWMA strongly encourages teaching institutions and students from other countries to benefit from the possibilities of international networking and access to lectures by many of the most experienced wound management experts in the world.

In 2012, students from the following institutions are expected to participate in the EWMA UCM in Vienna:

Haute École de Santé                          Katho university college Roeselare

The advantages of the EWMA UCM in brief

The EWMA University Conference Model:

  • Allows participating teaching institutions to deliver the main taught component of a wound course during the EWMA Conference;
  • Provides students with a unique opportunity to engage actively in the professional learning environment of the EWMA conference;
  • Gives industry partners an opportunity to create or enhance company educational profile.

Course structure

  • Students register at a participating university and receive pre-course materials prior to the Conference and may in some cases access pre-conference activities before the Conference.
  • A unique programme of activities based on the conference programme is devised by the academic staff from the participating universities. Time for informal networking with peers and wound healing experts is a central part of the programme.
  • Lecturers could opt to add post-conference activities after the conference has ended.
  • After the conference, students will continue to be supported by the participating universities until they submit an assignment at the end of the course.

Participating in the EWMA UCM Social Network

UCM has launched a social network to enhance the participants’ possibilities for discussing their field of interest and to keep connected with fellow peers who have also participated in the EWMA UCM through the years.

The EWMA UCM social network has been established to support the networking between the students participating in the programme. The community also aims in the future to support the exchange of knowledge between previous course participants, enabling these to draw of the various professional backgrounds of other participants.

The background for this initiative is to strengthen the sharing of information, best practice and latest research, which is central to the development of cost effective/efficient wound management and tissue viability services across Europe. If you have participated in the UCM programme and want to be a part of the network please send the EWMA secretariat at ewma@ewma.org.
